Frequently asked questions
The questions we are actually asked on the phone in Carmel Valley, answered the way we would answer them there.
Questions
Answers before you call
Does the refrigerator have to come out of the kitchen to be fixed?
No, and taking it out would be the wrong way to start. The condenser comes forward through the grille, and this equipment is meant to be serviced standing in its opening. Built-ins here sit on engineered plank or large-format tile run tight to the toe kick. We slide one forward only when a water line or rear fitting leaves no choice, over protection.
Do you really answer at night, and what does an after-hours call involve?
Yes. The phone is covered at any hour, holidays included, so a compartment that goes warm at eleven on a Saturday reaches a person, not a recording. Emergency and off-hours calls can carry an additional service charge, quoted on the phone, not added to an invoice later. Same-day appointments across 92130 happen when the schedule has room, and we say so when it does not.
What information helps most on the phone?
Which compartment is wrong, when it began, whether it declined slowly or stopped at once, and whatever the display is showing. Then the model number if the plate is reachable, since it dates the control generation and the evaporator layout, which decides what parts we load. Saying when the kitchen was put in helps too; in Carmel Valley that pins the year closely.
What parts do you fit, and what happens if one has to be ordered?
Replacement components that meet or exceed the original specification. An off-brand fan motor or a copy of a control board runs fine until it becomes the same call a season later. If a part is not on board, the diagnosis still finishes that day: what failed, what it costs, before we leave. Nothing is fitted without your say-so.
Will a repair affect my Sub-Zero factory warranty?
Check with the manufacturer before you book anyone, ourselves included. Coverage on the sealed system turns on who did the work, so use a repair you already own before buying it twice. This comes up in the newer Pacific Highlands Ranch and Torrey Highlands kitchens, where equipment can still be young enough to be covered; built-ins in older Carmel Valley are well past it.
We just bought the house and the built-in came with it. Can you check it before something fails?
Yes. A refrigerator that changes owners arrives with no history: nobody knows when the condenser was last cleaned, whether the defrost drain has ever been cleared, or how long the door has been carrying a panel out of alignment. A maintenance visit measures each compartment, checks the seals, hinges, drains and airflow path, and checks the ice maker's supply. You get written findings.
How is the price agreed, and what actually happens on the visit?
In two steps, both before any work. What the visit costs is quoted on the phone. Then the technician opens the grille and the covers, measures at the components, and puts a single number on the repair those readings point to, parts and labor together. You approve it and that is what you pay. If a unit is not worth fixing we say so plainly.
Is it better to repair or replace my Sub-Zero unit?
Sub-Zero appliances represent a premium investment built for lasting performance. In most cases, professional repair offers a significantly more cost-effective solution than replacement. Our experts assess your appliance’s age, condition, and repair costs to recommend the best choice for extending its reliable operation.
