What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
Nearly all of it comes from behind the grille, not from inside the cabinet where people go looking. Dust, pet hair or a stray scrap of packaging reaching the condenser fan blade will rattle or tick.
Why we start there
A fan bearing on its way out whines and gets louder over weeks. Compressor mounts harden with age and hum into the cabinetry, which in a Carmel Valley kitchen with stone counters and a hard floor carries a long way. None of it is an emergency on the day. A fan left to seize is, because a unit that cannot reject heat stops being a noise problem and becomes a warm refrigerator.
What happens next
Open-plan kitchens make this worse than it deserves to be. When the kitchen runs straight into the family room, with hard surfaces and height above it, a hum that would be inaudible in a closed galley kitchen carries across the whole ground floor and gets blamed on everything except the refrigerator. Here is the quick test: if the noise changes when you open a door, it is a compartment fan. If it does not change at all, it is the condenser fan or the compressor, and both of those live behind the grille.
How to narrow it down before we arrive. A rattle or buzz that stops when you press gently on the grille is something loose or something touching a fan blade. A whine that has grown steadily over a month is a bearing. A hum you feel through the floor more than you hear is compressor mounts. A gurgle or a pop shortly after the unit shuts off is refrigerant settling and is entirely normal. Say which of those it sounds like when you call and the part can come with us.

Which compartment is wrong, when it began, whether it declined slowly or stopped at once, and whatever the display is showing. Then the model number if the plate is reachable, since it dates the control generation and the evaporator layout, which decides what parts we load. Saying when the kitchen was put in helps too; in Carmel Valley that pins the year closely.
What parts do you fit, and what happens if one has to be ordered?
