Why has my ice maker stopped making ice?

Why we start there
Undersized, hollow or half-formed means water is not arriving in the volume the mold expects, which here is usually a filter past its date, scale narrowing the fill path, or a fill tube that has partly frozen. No cubes at all, in a compartment that is still cold, is the harvest side instead: the module, its thermostat or its motor. The two need opposite repairs, and a pressure reading at the inlet valve is what separates them.
What happens next
The water is why this fault is so common in 92130. San Diego's municipal supply is hard, and an ice maker is where hardness shows up first, because the same narrow passage is wetted and frozen thousands of times a year. Scale narrows the fill tube, sits on the valve seat, and slowly reduces the fill volume, so the cubes shrink over months rather than failing on a Tuesday. If your filter is well past its date and the cubes have been getting smaller, that is where to start before you agree to a module.
The second local cause catches people out. If your ice maker is plumbed to an under-sink reverse-osmosis tap rather than the cold supply, it is working on a fraction of the pressure the inlet valve was designed for, and less again while the RO tank is refilling. The machine keeps up overnight and falls behind by evening, which reads exactly like a failing ice maker. Nothing is broken. We find out where the water comes from before we look at anything else.
