Why is there water under my refrigerator?
Short answer
Water on a Carmel Valley kitchen floor is a small repair sitting on top of an expensive one, because these kitchens are mostly engineered wood or large-format tile over slab and the floor starts absorbing before anyone notices.
Why we start there
Clean water at the front, appearing quickly, is usually the supply line to the ice maker or dispenser failing at a fitting. Cloudy water arriving slowly, with ice on the freezer floor, is a defrost drain that has iced closed so the melt water backs up inside the cabinet and runs out under the door. Both are ordinary parts, and neither stops on its own.
What happens next
Tell the two apart before you call and you will often save a visit. Slide a paper towel under the front edge and watch it: fast, clean, cold water that reappears within the hour points at the water line. A damp patch that spreads over a day, with ice building on the freezer floor and water standing in the bottom of the fresh-food compartment, is the drain. The drain is far more common on units that have already been showing a defrost fault, so if you have also been chipping frost out by hand, that is your answer.
The reason we push hard on this fault is the floors. Carmel Valley construction is largely slab on grade with engineered plank or tile run right up to the toe kick, and a built-in refrigerator sits with its full weight on top of it. Water that gets under a plank line has nowhere to go and no airflow to dry it out, and by the time the plank cups the bill has moved from a fitting to a floor. This is the one fault we would genuinely rather hear about today than on Monday.
